A Guide to Temporary Work With THOMAS Recruitment

The THOMAS Recruitment Group are an Employment Business. We supply temporary, contract and permanent staff to various companies throughout the UK to various sectors.

THOMAS will endeavour to find you regular work in your chosen field. You will be paid for the actual hours worked at a pay rate agreed at the beginning of every contracted assignment. If temporary work is new to you, or you’ve not worked with THOMAS before, we’ve compiled some frequently asked questions to answer any questions you may have.

Due to the nature of the role, often you will receive very little notice, however we will always try to provide you with a much notice as possible. Companies often use temporary staff in an emergency or due to last minute orders, therefore you must be able to attend work at short notice.

When we advise you about a contract, we will provide you with an idea of how long the assignment is excepted to last. This is an estimation only as quite often the client is unsure themselves and require the flexibility of staffing levels on a weekly basis. Rest assured, however, that should the assignment end we will endeavour to find you another assignment as quickly as possible, but please keep in regular contact with us as things change rapidly daily.

After your registration is complete, assuming your work references are of a good standard, and we consider you to be suitable to work for THOMAS Recruitment, you will be considered for any temporary assignments that your skill-set or experience matches with our clients. We will contact you by telephone and provide you with all the relevant details of the job, hours of work, company location, clients expectations and length of assignment. If you accept the assignment, we fully expect your commitment from you at that point. If you are unable to complete the assignment for any reason, please tell us immediately, we will call you again next time.

We always have to wait and react to the needs of our clients and we would hope to offer you an assignment very quickly, but its always advisable to contact our offices daily so if a situation arises quickly, you’re on the priority list.

When you work through THOMAS Recruitment you are contracted out to that client on our behalf. You may, therefore, be paid more or less per hour than permanent members of staff for the first 12 weeks of a long-term assignment. After 12 weeks you will be fully entitled to the same basic pay and conditions as the permanent staff of the client.

Yes, we will make all the necessary statutory deductions from your weekly pay. If you do not provide us with a P45, we will ask you to sign a P46. This will give you a temporary week 1 tax code, which will prevent you from paying emergency tax. If you receive a P45 from a previous employer later on in the assignment, please forward this to us immediately and we can then adjust your tax code accordingly.

You will be paid weekly in arrears on a Friday by close of play directly into your own bank account via a BACS system. You are paid only for the hours worked that are signed and authorised by the client. If your assignment requires you to sign in and out or utilise a clock card or time & attendance system, then please ensure you work to those guidelines correctly as failing to is likely to delay payment. All workers have the right under the Working Time Regulations to accrue 5.6 weeks annual leave in a leave year. THOMAS Recruitment’s leave year  runs from January to December each year. You will start accruing holidays from the first day of your assignment. What you are paid when you take holidays will be dependent on your average earnings over the previous 12 weeks and therefore will fluctuate based on the assignments you worked on at the time.  You must contact our payroll department regarding holiday pay to request it and please note that holidays must be taken before the end of the leave year and payment will not be made in lieu.
